Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children

A new complication of Post Covid Syndrome is affecting children. For no apparent reason, children are experiencing severe pain caused by inflammation of all the organs of their body.

Some of the symptoms of this disease are mimicking other manageable diseases in children when in reality it is Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children. It's also called the Paediatric Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome.

The symptoms are -

  • Fever

  • Abdominal pain

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Neck pain

  • Rash

  • Bloodshot eyes

  • Feeling extra tired

  • Trouble breathing

  • Pain or pressure in the chest that does not go away

  • Inability to wake or stay awake

  • Pale, gray, or blue-colored skin, lips, or nail beds, depending on skin tone

  • Severe abdominal pain

Out of these, the last 5 symptoms are emergency signs that you need to rush to the hospital because it can become life-threatening very quickly.

A lot of these symptoms will sometimes appear slowly after recovery from Covid-19. And suddenly, your child may start experiencing severe pain. Your doctor will try to rule out any other disease with tests like -

  • Blood tests

  • Chest x-ray

  • Heart ultrasound (echocardiogram)

  • Abdominal ultrasound
